Handouts
MATERIALS (for one backdrop mural)
- 3 Luan boards 4’ x 8’ (purchase from lumber store, about $17.00 each)
- 3 pre-assembled backings with cross bars 2’ x 6’ (about $ 12.00 each)
- 1 pre-assembled back support 1’ x 6’ (about $8.00 each)
- 1 gallon flat latex primer
- inexpensive 4” paint brushes
overhead projector and clear transparencies
pencils and permanent black markers
latex paints (quart size) of desired colors (eggshell finish)
1 gallon white latex (eggshell) for tinting colors
good quality brushes in a variety of sizes
plastic containers with covers to store paints
PROCESS
1. Select the painting for the backdrop mural
2. Find a picture of it approximately 81/2” x 11”
3. Prime both sides of the Luan boards with flat white latex.
4. Trace the picture onto an overhead transparency.
5. Project the picture onto the 3 Luan boards and trace the picture onto the boards. As you draw interpret/modify the picture to fit the boards.
6. Outline the drawing with permanent black marker.
7. Paint the backdrop/mural. Between painting sessions (when paint is dry) stack boards on top of each other on the floor. This will help to prevent warping.
8. Prepare a sketch of the painting and make a color chart – number paint containers and write the numbers on the sketch.
9. After back supports are secured to the boards, touch up over the screws.
